Edmonton Oilers prospect Carter Savoie signed an amateur tryout with the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL on Monday.
Selected by the Oilers in the fourth-round (100th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft, Savoie played the past two seasons with the University of Denver Pioneers in the NCAA. Savoie completed his collegiate career with 36 goals and 65 points in 63 games, and helped the Pioneers capture the 2022 NCAA Division 1 national championship.
The St. Albert, Alberta native finished tied for fourth in the NCAA in goals (23), tied for sixth in points (45), tied for second in game-winning goals (6), third in power-play goals (11) and tied for third in shots on goal (152) in 39 games this season. He was named to the 2021-22 All-NCHC Second Team and was on the All-Tournament Team for both the NCAA West Regional and Frozen Four.
Savoie scored the overtime winner against the the number 1 ranked school in the nation, the University of Michigan Wolverines, in the Frozen Four to send Denver to the national championship game. The 5-foot-9, 192-pound sniper found the back of the net in three consecutive tournament games, including a pair of game-winning goals.
Since he was drafted 18 months ago, Savoie hasn’t participated in any on-ice activities with the Oilers to protect his NCAA status. But the fans in Oil Country will have the opportunity to get a closer look at Savoie at Oilers Rookie Camp in September.
And with the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship rescheduled for August 9-20 in Edmonton, Savoie will be looking to win gold with Team Canada in his hometown as well. After he wasn’t even invited to Canada’s selection camp this past December, Savoie should be on the short list to make the national team this summer.
The 20-year-old will surely sign his three-year, entry-level contract with the Oilers after the Condors’ playoff run. Savoie is expected to make his pro hockey debut with the Condors on Friday.
