Afternoon matinee hockey games and the Edmonton Oilers go together like green eggs and ham.
I do not like them, Sam I Am!
Neither did the fans, as Saturday’s matchup versus the St. Louis Blues did not prove to be fruitful. In fact, it was a close game defensively-wise after the Blues tallied a power-play marker at 14:56 in the first period. At the end of the game though, St. Louis took home a 2-0 win and remain the only undefeated team in the NHL to start the season at 3-0-0.
Three Stars:
- Jack Campbell. Didn’t have a chance on the only goal against him in the game, kept the Oilers in it when called upon. Since getting shellacked by Calgary, the 30-year old netminder has been settling in nicely. The best stop of the game was a give away pass by Brett Kulak in behind the Oilers net, and Campbell stones high-flyer Jordan Kyrou with a no doubter of a high danger goal chance.
- Warren Foegele. Didn’t show on the scoresheet this game, but he was very noticeable in all facets. Was a pest for most of the game, plus the left-wingers chemisty with linemate Ryan McLeod just gets better and better.
- Defensive play. Believe it or not, the Oilers were just as in-your-face as the Blues were. Limiting scoring chances, getting sticks in lanes and very few giveaways were noticed in the game. From a fans’ perspective, this game was very boring to watch-Edmonton limited St. Louis to 21 shots on net, it was the lowest total in recent memory.
Other Noteables:
-Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft wasn’t coy with his post-game comments. “There was two good hockey teams on the ice today, but we’re not in the business of taking moral victories. We’re in the business of winning hockey games. I thought the first few minutes of the game we had good control, but you take a o-zone penalty and this is what you get.”
-Dylan Holloway is still day-to-day after his collision with Buffalo’s Ilya Lyubuskin, but is expected to go on the road after the Oilers’ current homestand is complete.
-The Oilers will have to shake off this loss quickly, as they play against St. Louis in their own barn next Wednesday at the Enterprise Center.
-Next game: at home vs. Pittsburgh Penguins, 6pm MST start.
