The Edmonton Oilers placed Kailer Yamamoto and Ryan McLeod on injured reserve on Sunday.
Yamamoto, who retroactive to November 8, is eligible to return to the lineup in less than seven days. However, Yamamoto won’t play against the Florida Panthers on Monday. The 24-year-old has no goals and three assists in 13 games this season.
“I’m feeling better,” Yamamoto told Oilers TV after practice on Sunday. “Every day I’m feeling better, so it’s a slow process, but it’s getting there.
With Evander Kane and Yamamoto both out of action, losing McLeod for any length of time creates even more challenges for a depleted Oilers squad. McLeod will miss at least the next four games after suffering an undisclosed injury during a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers on Saturday. The 23-year-old tallied a career-high three assists in the third period en route to the come-from-behind victory.
Tyler Benson returns to the Oilers following a conditioning stint with the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL, where he picked up two assists in three games. Benson, who suffered the knee injury during a pre-season game on October 3, will make his season debut on Monday. The 24-year-old had one goal and two points in 29 games as a rookie with the Oilers last season.
After an excellent showing during the 2022 Young Stars Classic and solid start to the AHL season, James Hamblin has finally earned his first NHL opportunity. Hamblin ranks second on the Condors in assists (6) and second in points (9) in 13 games this season. The 23-year-old is expected to play in his first NHL game for his hometown team on Monday.
