The Bakersfield Condors signed Sam Gagner signed a one-year AHL contract on Monday.
Gagner, who signed a processional tryout with the Edmonton Oilers on August 28, had been practicing with the team for the past seven weeks. However, Gagner didn’t play in any pre-season games, as he continued to recover from a pair of hip surgeries.
Though he’s headed to the AHL to get back in playing shape, Gagner remains optimistic that he can get back to the NHL with the Oilers.
“I’m excited to be back,” Gagner told Oilers TV on September 21. “This is a place that feels like home to me. I’ve had a lot of fun being an Oiler. I have a soft spot for Edmonton. My wife’s family is from here. I’m going to give it everything I have to try and be a part of this organization.”
The 34-year-old has played with the Oilers (2007-2014, 2019-2020), Arizona Coyotes (2014-15), Philadelphia Flyers (2015-16), Columbus Blue Jackets (2016-17), Vancouver Canucks (2017-2019), Detroit Red Wings (2020-2022) and Winnipeg Jets (2022-23), tallying 192 goals and 519 points in 1,015 career NHL games.
Gagner also had four points in four games on an AHL conditioning stint with the Condors in 2019-20. The 16-year NHL veteran should provide quality leadership to the Oilers’ top prospects, and give the Condors some added offensive pop in their top-six.
