The Edmonton Oilers completed a perfect five-game homestand with a 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils at Rogers Place on Saturday.
Trailing 3-2 early in the third period, the Oilers scored three goals in a span of 3:48 to retake the lead before Connor McDavid scored his 35th goal of the season into an empty net to secure the victory. It was only the fourth time in franchise where the Oilers had swept a five or more games on the same homestand and first since December 2015.
With the victory, the Oilers improved to 35-23-4 on the season, giving them the second-highest points percentage in the Pacific Division at .597.
Here are three other records and milestones from Saturday:
Six consecutive 90-point seasons
By registering a goal and two assists, McDavid reached the 90-point plateau for the sixth consecutive season. McDavid became the first player to record six consecutive 90-point seasons since Jaromir Jagr from 1995-96 through 2000-01.
McDavid also joined Wayne Gretzky and Dale Hawerchuk as the only players in NHL history with six or more 90-point seasons before turning 26. If not for a quad injury in 2019-20, McDavid surely would be approaching his sixth straight 100-point season.
Still, McDavid is the most dominant offensive player the game has seen in more than 20 years. No other player has more than three 90-point seasons since 2016-17.
21 consecutive wins when scoring first
Winning five straight games on home ice is the only thing that matters to the Oilers. However, they also made some history in the process on Saturday by recording their 21st consecutive win when scoring the first goal of the game.
The Oilers broke the record set by the Montreal Canadiens in 1944-45. On the downside, they have only opened the scoring in 21 of 62 games this season. Edmonton has had better starts since Jay Woodcroft took over behind the bench, but it’s still an area they can improve on.
The orange and blue also stayed undefeated when leading after the first period this season at 20-0-0.
Three consecutive six-goal games
During their glory years in the 1980s and early 1990s, scoring six goals in a game happened on a regular basis for the Oilers. But in the modern game, even elite teams don’t score six goals frequently.
However, the Oilers’ firepower was too much for their opponents this week, winning the three games by scores of 7-5, 6-1 and 6-3. It was the first time the Oilers had scored six goals in three straight games since December 22-29, 1993.
The line of McDavid, Evander Kane and Kailer Yamamoto led the way with 16 points in the three victories over the Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres and Devils. Interestingly, McDavid had a career-high six points in a game the last time the Oilers played the Colorado Avalanche on November 14, 2019, who are the Oilers next opponent.
