The Edmonton Oil King put together a short two-game winning streak thanks to an excellent performance by goalie Kolby Hay, who turning aside all 33 shots he faced in a 3-0 win over the Prince Albert Raiders on Tuesday.
NHL draft eligible Adam Jecho continued his great start to the season with the opening, and ultimately, game-winning goal against the Raiders. The massive right-shot center also picked up an assist, increasing his point total to six (three goals and three assists) in five games.
Another standout from the early season is the penalty kill. Edmonton’s PK unit is clicking at an 85.7% rate (18-for-21) right now. Their penalty kill has needed to come through for them, as they rank fifth in the WHL for the most times penalties taken. Their penalty killing staying at this level all year would be hugely important, as they love to play an aggressive forechecking style at five-on-five. This also gives extra room for players like Marshall Finnie to be a pest.

Speaking of Finnie, the Lethbridge product has taken a big step this year and continues to impress. Finnie has four goals and an assist so far this season, but it’s been his commitment to being a 200-foot player and a thorn in the other teams’ best players side that has stood out most. On the backend, Parker Alcos has played a key role manning the top pair with Marc Lajoie. The right shot defenceman possess great vision on breakouts and can make stretch passes with ease. Rarely is the Port Moody native looking to go off the glass and out, he values each puck touch and tries to make the most of it.
Edmonton’s next home game is on October 7 against the Raiders, who will be looking for get a win back after a tough defeat at home. My eyes will be on first-year NHL draft eligible Ryder Ritchie, who I expect to be a top-90 selection in the 2024 NHL Draft.
