Oilers Western Conference Final Game 5 History
May 31, 2024Nugent-Hopkins: The coach’s favourite player
June 1, 2024The Edmonton Oilers are now one win away from advancing to the Stanley Cup Final after a convincing 3-1 win over the Dallas Stars in Game 5. The Oilers were in control from the beginning. The Stars only managed to get four shots in the first period and only twenty in the entire game. A late tip in goal by Wyatt Johnston got the Stars on the board, but it was too little too late.
Call Outs
Honestly, I have nobody to call out tonight.
Stand Outs
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins received tons of praise from Leon Draisaitl and his coach before Game 5. Nugent-Hopkins proved them right with his play in Game 5. He scored two powerplay goals, which were the first two powerplay goals for the Oilers in the series. Nugent-Hopkins also played a role in a penalty kill that killed two Stars powerplays, which brings the total to 25 consecutive penalty kills.
Shoutouts
Philip Broberg scored his first NHL playoff goal in Game 5. Broberg blasted a slap shot from the point that found its way into the top corner behind Jake Oettinger. Broberg added three blocked shots in 12:40 of ice time. Broberg had something of a tough shift early in the game where he failed to clear the puck twice, but he rebounded nicely.
Evan Bouchard got two assists. That brings him to 25 points in the playoffs, which ties him for the sixth most points in a single playoff run. Bouchard also became the third fastest defenceman to reach 50 career playoff points behind Bobby Orr (39) and Brian Leetch (41), achieving the feat in his 45th playoff game.
Stuart Skinner was superb in this game. He made nineteen saves on twenty shots in the win. Skinner made four stops on grade A opportunities from the Stars, including three in the third period. There were enough chances for the Stars to make this game interesting, but Skinner shut the door when called upon in this game. I wouldn’t say that he stole the win, but he was an important part of it.
Wrap
The Oilers had struggled in their last two Game 5s when the series was tied at two games apiece. They laid an egg in Game 5 of their second round series against the Vancouver Canucks. They also lost Game 5 of their second round series last year.
That wasn’t the case tonight. This was a complete effort from the Oilers. They played solid hockey for the full sixty minutes in this game. This win brings their all-time record in Game 5 of Conference Finals to 5-1.
